http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrous

So I was reading that page and came to this part: ...."Due to the greatly increased cylinder pressures, the engine as a whole is placed under greater stress"....

Does nitrous actually increase cylinder pressure? If so, greatly? Nitrous doesnt increase your compression ratio. That's simply a result of cylinder and crank. So I was thinking maybe because the explosion is bigger. But since we have exhaust ports, is it really "greatly increased"?

Or is wiki just wrong? From what I know, most common failures due to using nitrous is not enough fuel, so you get a really really hot cylinder wall and it burns through.

A lean condition usually results in a hole burnt directly in the center of the piston, I've seen them so bad they actually burn the top of the aluminum rod as well. If you have a piston what burned up the sidewall that actually is a rich condition, there is too much fuel and the fuel gets under the rings causing flutter, when the rings flutter it allows oil to get up into the combustion chamber, Waaalaaa, cutting torch effect. This is why most guys spraying big hp levels try to use a nitrous oil like royal purple makes which doesn't burn very well, makes it more
friendly to tune without destroying parts.
Yes cylinder pressure increases dramatically, thus why if you build an engine with 15:1 and spray on top of it, you'll need a good 118+ octain fuel.
