Here's a question for you small block lovers out there. Everything being equal, $ for $, CID for CID, jet for jet, trans for trans, tire for tire, lb for lb (whew, finally the question), Can a small block actually outrun a big block or make more HP? I would have to say no. I think the cost would be the biggest prohibiting factor.

Whaddya think? REALISTICALLY SPEAKING! Not just SB and BB BS...

OK lets clear the air and use facts..

To make 900 HP from a 358 smallblock N/A we are talking in the sum of $35,000

To make 900 HP from a 555 bigblock N/A is around $15,000

So it is fair to say that a BBC with more CID will make the same power for a lot less.

Now the CID for CID. It is not cheaper to build a 420 CID BBC than it is for a 420 SBC. They are about the same price.

For the fact of what will out run what. I run in NSCA Super Modified. We are CID to weight class. No small block weight breaks at all. The winner for the last 4 years has been a SBC. We have about 22 cars in the class and only 2-3 are SB's. So the BBC have had more than enough chance to dominate this class.

The SBC CID to CID is a lighter assembly. If you were to build everything equal (Stroke, Rod lengths, Bore dia., cam lifts, heads CFM to CFM..etc, etc...) the SBC would make more power do to the lighter weight parts.

Oh yeah, and a small block does not get a weight break in any class as we look at the big picture.

Pat Musi 707 BBC is running at 5# per CID
Milt Decker (before the BBC guys started crying) ran a 461 SBC at 7#'s per CID.

They both ran in the 6.60 range before they hit Milt with the weight! Why would someone have to do that if in the big picture the car is heavier?

Can someone please explain how that is a weight break?

People look at the SBC car being over all lighter, but never think of the CID to weight ratio. A small block has always made more HP per CID than the BBC.

BBC guys please dont use a Top Fuel Nitro motor for an example either. That is not a realistic comparision....

Kevin, the man asked for an honest opinion backed by fact. Can you please give me an answer better than "Cause I think it is the way to go!"

I agree.Although Monty is right about the CID/weight thing. The small block combo is 200lbs lighter, but building a 420CI SBC is not cheap HP.You can overbore a junk yard 402bbc and have close on 420cid for chump change.... Yes,you could do it to a 400sbc but the bores would break as soon as you showed them a piston, never mind run em in there.......

Ok, it's evident that we need some more CLARITY on the subject Monty. Not trying to cast stones because I can make either combo run fast BUT, as I stated earlier $ for $, CID for CID, jet for jet, trans for trans, tire for tire, lb for lb do you really think you could outrun a big block. Ok how about I put it this way. Given 20k and Kevin gets 20k (since you guys are the ones going at it)....It looks like both of you guys are RE-back halving your cars...If he put 10.5's on and you both weighed the same, do you think you could outrun him?

Further...the SB and the BB don't need to necessarily have the same bore, stroke etc...You would be limited by bore size, where as I (ie..Kevin) would probably run a bigger bore (4.5) with a smaller crank stroke (3.3 ie reduced weight).

Reevaluate, recalculate and tell me what you think now?

Wait a minute Marc. You stated if things stay the same. CID to CID... That to me would mean 420 BBC vs a 420 SBC.. Not a 420 SBC vs. 632 BBC.. Like I said. It has been proven time and time again that when things stay the same.. CID to CID.. Weight to weight.. the SBC has come out on top!!!

I do agree its easier to make more power with more CID. Thats a no brainer. You BBC guys prove its a no brainer.. LMFAO

Now give me my ball... Im going home...

Since I gave some CID to CID examples.. Can you guys give me some? Keeping things the same without SBC "WEIGHT BREAKS"

Monty, I'm looking for a mag. that I have where EVERYTHING is the same. 408 ci. in a 70 Camaro. BB vs. SB. Same trans, same size headers, same gears, everything was the same, I think there was $4,000.00 price. BB used oval ports and small used Darts 2's, same lift and dur. When it was all done, the BB  was almost 2 tenths quiker. Just to let you know. When alls = bb was out in front in that situation. John
P.S. now give me the ball
