when should you switch from a solid motor mount to a motor plate/mid plate setup? in other words, how much abuse can a solid moroso type motor mount handle?

It's not so much the mount , It's how much abuse the side of the block can take.
All the stress is taken by the midplate. Make sure it is as strong as you can make it. The front plate is just there to hold up the front of the motor.

With my 454 and a 275 shot we tore our motor mounts....

They tore where the relief is where the metal is bent .. I can't remember if it was the frame side mount or the motor side mount....

They crack there all the time. Usually it's from having the motor in the car with no trans behind it to hold everything in place.

ok, if i were to install some motor plates would i want to keep the motor in the stock location?

If I were going to go through that much trouble to put a motor plate in, I would move it back as much as I could get away with. but my car is stupid heavy on the front end.

I would pull it back.. I think with a stock fire wall all you will get is maybe an inch and half if I remeber correctly.... This still puts #1 plug in front of the spindle which some rules state you must have.... Mine was pulled way pack to line up #1 with the spindle and had to notch the fire wall....
