 Post subject: Axle installation

Well I started putting my 9" together last night, got the center section in and 1 axle inand secrued with no problem.

Then I went to the other side to install the axle and I can only get it in to where the bearings are about 1/2" away from the race and it seems like thats as far as it wants to go. We checked the splines on the axle and the spool and see no interference.

Anyone have any ideas I can try

Moser 35 spline axles

First I would double check by pulling the pig out and then install that axle into the splines. If it goes in then use a big hammer and a block of wood...... Some of them are stubborn Phil... Does it go in to where the o-ring is or approximately that deep???? If so, install the retaining bracket, and bolts and nuts and snug them. Then take a block of wood and lay it across the studs and give it a wack or 2... Then check to see if the nuts and bolts are loose to see if there is anymore engagement. If so snug the bolts again and then wack it again until fully engaged....

I agree with Kevin. Also check and make sure there isn't any paint or a burr where the bearing seats . Be sure and use some Vasiline or other lube on the orings. They can roll out and get cut when your installing the axles. If that happens you will have a leak.

Not trying to be insulting, but you are putting them in the right side ? there should be about an inch difference side to side.

Not taken that way at all Rick, yes I have the short axle on the short side and thats the one that we had no problem with, we being Jim Gorski and myself. We took the axle out and check it then reinstalled it and used a 3 pound hammer and it doesnt move from what I can tell. but I will pull the pig and see whats going on

My bad, I just realized after going over what I did that I put the short axle on the drivers side (left) when it should have been the LONG axle on the drivers side

:oops: thats what I get for trying to rush and get the rear end in the car last night late. Shame on me

Well,
we found out that the splines were not long enough for the spool. Had to have the axles re-splined a little longer. Mis-match in parts !!!!!

I wasn't aware that was something that could be done??? A typical axle I thought was thick in diameter in the area of the spline???? Was there enough thick diameter length to lengthen the spline???

i was about to ask about that myself. im going to narrow the rear on my car about 2" on each side. and i was wondering if i could get my axles resplined to accomodate the narrowed housing.

There typicaly isn't that much room to change the axle.. If I am correct, they must have been real close to the axle fitting?????

It depends on who makes the axles. Some all the same diameter the whole length.
