1553 - Having discovered the pulmonary circulation of blood, Michael Servetus celebrated by being burned for heresy in Switzerland. They didn’t have Disney back then. 1612 - The Polish army invaded Russia so that they could surrender to Prince Dimitri Pojarski and his Cossacks. 1659 - The Massachusetts Bay Colony celebrated the joys of religious freedom by executing two Quakers for their religious beliefs. 1806 - Napoleon entered Berlin as Emperor. 1809 - President Madison decided we’d just go ahead and take West Florida. 1858 - Teddy Roosevelt was born in New York City. He had to fight a bear to get out of the womb. This was back when it was fashionable for some women to have bear vaginas. 1870 - The Prussians took fort Metz from the French. 1873 - Glidden invented barbed wire, or at least received the patent. Others, including Cher, claim to have invented it first. 1891 - D.B. Downing patented the mailbox. “What, it’s just a box, isn’t it?” “No, you put letters in it.” 1904 - Mayer George McClellan opened the New York City subway system. He was immediately mugged. 1917 - 20,000 women marched for voting rights in New York. I bet they weren't topless. 1922 - Luigi Facta’s government yielded to Mussolini and his Fascists, who were not a dance troupe after all. 1927 - Fox released the first sound news film. 1939 - John Cleese, ubur comic, was born. 1962 - Kruschev offered to trade his Cuba missile bases for America’s Turkey missile bases. 1994 - The U.S. announced that it had more than one million citizens in jail. |
