Post subject:  chromolly or mild steel.......

I cut my old roll bar out of the duster and am ready to buy a new cage(12 pt, x door bars, rocker bar) I have heard from a couple people that chromolly is not good for a street driven car...They said that the chromolly has a ''memory'' so if you dont jack up the car when you are not driving it that it can actually change it's structure depending on wich way the car is leaning(not level)??????? Also the chromolly is much more expensive......and is it that much lighter??????? I can get the mild steel for $330 and the chromolly for $680....thanks guys...

I have built about 4 tube chassis cars and about 30 cages. Tube chassis Chrome moly cars do have the memory you speak of. But your type of car uni-body and I am assuming tied frame (mild steel) caged properly will not be an issue. In my friends Super Stock Plymouth we took out a 6 pt mild steel bar and put in an 8 pt Moly cage. the weight diff was 38 lbs. More tube, stiffer tube and less weight. And remember that moly has to be Tig welded vs. Mig welding mild steel.

The Malibu was about to undergo the same change at a weight savings of about 70lbs from the old 12 point cage. But with the new chassis specs it seems more viable to move on to a different type of car. Tig welding is also much more involved than mild steel, and most newer shops you should be wary of. These cages will be looked at closely in the upcoming season and tech inspections.
