Post subject:  Big day for Pontiackers
Big news for me and my fellow Pontiac enthusiasts:

One of the six '63 Tempest SuperDuty coupes has reappeared (after about 40 years), right here in Harrison Twp.

This one belonged to Stan Antlocer was raced under the Stan Long Pontiac banner. I saw it on ebay over the weekend but couldn't check the VIN and historical photos til this morning. Looks like the real deal.

The significance is that six cars were built originally, Tempests with 421 cu in engines and aluminum front ends. Up until this point only one car had been found and restored, the car that originally belonged to George Delorean (John's brother). George's car is the one that dad saw at the Engineering building before it was shipped and the car that started a two (or more) generation love affair with Pontiacs.

I was fooled intially because of the rusty front end on this car - but - it is well documented that the aluminum was removed many years ago and is owned by a gentleman in Florida. Obviously they put steel on the car at that time.

There were three or four of us that all got this same revelation around 8:15 this morning; I got all lightheaded but was ok after I laid down for a few minutes...

For a Pontiac guy it is the ultimate fantasy barn find.

The station wagon version of this (also 1 of 6) sold a couple years ago in the previous economy for $750,000.

Stans' car (on ebay) has shot up $7000 in the last 3 hours.

Sort of -

These, along with their full size brethren (Catalinas and Grand Prix) were the last "factory" race cars that were snuck out before the GM Corporate ban on racing.

Later efforts would be done under the radar and more "street" oriented.

Yes -

These things had some crazy design work involved...

The production version was a rear transaxle (the transmission was in the rear) and swing arm rear suspension like a Corvair. Power was fed by a curved "rope" driveshaft which was essentially an oversized speedo cable.

Engine options included a 326 cu in V8 which, in one of these cars, could scoot pretty good (that's what my Lemans convert has).

For these "50" Super Duty cars (of which only 6 coupes/ 6 wagons were built) they dropped in the 421 cu in version and the aforementioned aluminum front ends. For the transmission, two Corvair powerglide style transmission were bolted together to make a four speed "automatic" (the car was launched with a clutch pedal but the remaining shifts occured automatically). The Corvair sized ring and pinion was robust enough for about six passes, after which you simply installed another one or yanked the whole thing and put in a full size car solid rear axle...

Wow! How Cool is that! :D

On another note. I heard recently that Mary Johnson sold Davie's Nostalgia Super Stock Tempest for about $25k. What a shame. I really enjoyed being around Davie at the races. He was a real classic!
